The theme of the W.I.N. 2005 Annual Leadership Forum is “Leading for the Future.” Are you ready?
In today’s hectic business environment, we often find ourselves focusing more on meeting other objectives than on our own personal ones. To achieve real personal satisfaction and live authentically, it is important that we maintain balance between our “life” and “work” objectives.
To do this effectively we need to focus on:
1. What is important for us – our personal interests,
2. What are we good at – our personal strengths, and
3. How can we use our interests and strengths to make a significant contribution that gives us personal satisfaction and impacts our "work."
Our interests are determined by the roles we play – spouse, parent, friend, sister/brother, employee, employer, etc. and the personal values we have – achievement, prestige, creativity, adventure, security, etc. that when combined, help us define our personal mission. Our interests are also determined by the disciplines we choose – art, biology, chemistry, communications, engineering, finance, human resources, information technology, marketing, medicine, math, music, sales, sports, etc.
In addition to our personal interests, we also need to know we are good at – managing interpersonal relations, negotiating, creating new products, taking initiative and risks, dealing with stress, managing rapid change, working with customers, working with figures leading people/teams, doing detailed work, etc. We should get clarity on our skills/competencies and expertise from both our own and others’ perspectives.

By taking time to clarify our key interests and identify our strengths, we take the initial steps to personally get ourselves ready for our future. These help us focus our efforts on doing the right things that bring us the most enjoyment and personal satisfaction. They also provide important information to help build our self confidence and self esteem.
Although it sounds simple, it is not always easy to find the time needed to get ourselves better prepared to make informed personal choices. Three additional ingredients are required – authenticity, personal integrity and courage! It’s time to have courage and start getting ready to create our personal future.
